The origins of pomegranate fruit return to the land of Iran and have been cultivated since ancient times in the Mediterranean and northern India as well. The fruit was imported into the United States by Spanish immigrants in the late 16th century. Nowadays, pomegranates are grown throughout the Middle East, the Caucasus, North Africa and the tropical regions of Africa, Central Asia, some parts of the Mediterranean, and even in some parts of California and Arizona states. Pomegranates in the northern hemisphere usually grow from September to February, and in the southern hemisphere between March and April. In recent years, pomegranate consumption in Europe and the western hemisphere has become more prevalent than before.
